NSW Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment (ATFR) Scheme
Prior to 1969, successive NSW Governments deducted money from some Aboriginal people's pensions, family endowment payments, apprentice wages, inheritances and lump sum compensation payments. Sometimes this happened without peoples' consent or knowledge. This money was paid into Trust Funds operated first by the Aborigines Protection Board and then the Aborigines Welfare Board. In December 2004 the NSW Government announced that is would establish an Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment Scheme to repay wages or other money paid into Aboriginal Trust Funds between 1900 and 1968 and never repaid. The ATFR Scheme will make payments based on evidence that money had been paid into the Trust Funds and was never paid back. Repayments will not be capped and will be repaid in present-day dollar terms.
